Collegiate Life: Schools and the Student Culture of Raleigh
Higher education and the need to obtain it is hammered into all of us from a pretty young age. Its been years since I’ve been in high school, but I still remember seeing all the posters in my guidance counselor’s office talking about the average standard of living for a college graduate vs. a person with only a high school diploma/GED.
Education in general is one of the most vital resources the youth of any country has, and the skills and tools these institutions can provide are valuable regardless of who you are. But what about schools in Raleigh specifically? We have a few different colleges and uni’s, so what sets them apart?
I haven’t tried writing in a series yet, so lets do that by examining (in 3 parts) College and post-secondary education through a breakdown of schools and the culture around them, good and bad reasons to go to a school in Raleigh, and alternatives if maybe college isn’t your jam.
Raleigh is home to a number of schools. The most notorious of them being NC State University (NCSU) but also including Meredith College, Wake Technical Community College, Shaw University, William Peace University, and Saint Augustine University.
These schools are spread to the far corners of NC except for NCSU, Meredith, Shaw, and Peace. Those four occupy downtown Raleigh and make the bulk (along with Wake Tech) of school choices for kids graduating high school in Raleigh.
Sure, a fair number of kids will want to go to East Carolina University (ECU) or one of the University of North Carolina branches (UNC); but a good chunk of students like to stay close to home if the opportunity is afforded to them.
NCSU may be the exception, however, as they host kids from all over the state. Like many a state school similar to it, NCSU is held as the standard for most high school aged individuals it seems. I don’t have concrete numbers on this, but from my own anecdotal experiences I can tell you that from the mountains to the coastline, there’s enough NCSU merch and applications to fill a significant void.
This in combination with having a larger campus than any other Raleigh school, a strong STEM program that sees kids from even foreign countries coming here on visas to study at NCSU, and having the ability to house/feed more students than the other downtown schools, has lead to NC State having probably the most diverse student culture.
All walks of life from North Carolina attend NCSU, from proud members of the local communist party to people who might agree with the inane yellings of the Brickyard Preacher. Projects like the Freedom of Expression Tunnel encourage creativity and a wide swath of clubs allow people to express their interests freely.
This along with the popularity of the sports team, ubiquity of their merchandising, and community participation going so far as to even produce and sell their own brand of ice cream means that NCSU is an inescapable institution across the majority of NC. You could be in Boone, Asheville, Wilmington, Fayetteville, or Yadkinville even and there’s a damn good chance that one of the cars you pass or houses in your neighborhood will have something with the red wolf branding attached to it.
Despite this and the other colleges, however, Raleigh is more of a “Town with colleges” than a “College Town.” A college town is something more akin to Boone, where the majority of infrastructure and business around the school is propped up by the school itself. Restaurants that aren’t very good but stay open because they’re close enough to campus that families visiting their kids will pick them by virtue of proximity, public transit routed around access to academic buildings rather than venues or sights, the overwhelming sense that if the school vanished into thin air but none of the students did; the town would shrivel up and die within a week because the school was the only reason to stay.
NCSU is big in Raleigh, but were the school to disappear, Raleigh would still be Raleigh and life would likely go on (people who’d tailgate at Wolfpack games would probably still tailgate, just at Hurricanes games instead). The buildings, culture, and jobs around NCSU campus would of course be affected; but because of how NCSU is integrated pretty directly into downtown Raleigh, people would still travel those roads and patronize those businesses.
On top of that, the other Raleigh based institutions of higher learning are super insular communities. Shaw is a historically black college situated near Martin Luther King Jr. blvd, Meredith is an all girls school, and William Peace University is a private university that only recently became co-ed and is about 2-4 city blocks large in total.
Outside of Hillsborough and Western, our businesses don’t cater specifically to college students. Travel 20 to 30 minutes in any direction away from NCSU and you’ll still find something to see or do, unlike some towns in the more rural areas of the US.
As a bonus, having no specific campus culture attached to a city like Raleigh means that businesses will appeal to broader demographics. There’s a night club for practically every variety of 18-28 year old out there, at least three parks in downtown alone, and a bevy of centers for those interested in supporting their community (LGBT center of Raleigh does some amazing work).
Student pride is a thing, as with any school, regardless of how insular the campus cultures of the various schools are. No one’s going to bring up their school and how much they love it in polite conversation, but ask anyone where they went to college and they’ll beam with pride or tell fun stories about the experiences they had at their school.
I didn’t particularly enjoy my time at university too much, but even I’ll regale strangers with my various life experiences if someone makes the above mentioned mistake of asking. Everyone has a story or two even about a campus fun fact, like the steam tunnels of State or which elevator at Peace was always used for sex.
Next up, whenever I feel like writing again IDFK, the pros and cons of college in Raleigh.

Are Robots The Goose Laying The Golden Eggs? We’ll See.
Robot Reality Check: They Create Wealth—and Jobs | Is Christopher Mims confusing correlation and causation? Obviously the most advanced economies -- with the greatest degree of wealth -- are the ones buying the most robots. But it does not mean that having the robots creates all that wealth: it could be that having wealth enables companies to invest in robots.
While ITIF [Information Technology and Innovation Foundation] correlates GDP growth with robot adoption, the way that wealth increase is distributed depends on how the country adopts those technologies, says Irmgard Nübler, a senior economist at the International Labour Organization in Geneva.
Typically, she says, adoption of automation goes through two initial phases: worker displacement then job growth. Prof. Nübler believes that the record inequality in the U.S. seen in 2018 suggests we’re at the turning point between these two phases. Without policies in place to deal with these impacts, the inequality that arises in the first phase might persist.
The last time we saw a technological transition like this was in the 1920s and ’30s, when electricity and the automobile created a third industrial revolution in the U.S. What came next were “new institutions and new social movements,” she says, as society adjusted to changes in the nature of work.
One result was the “high school movement,” as secondary education became both free and compulsory, preparing an entire generation of Americans to move off the farm and become factory, clerical and service workers. This era also saw the rise of labor unions and the introduction of social security.
Prof. Acemoglu also studies what happens to workers in the U.S. after they lose their jobs to automation. The result, in the auto-manufacturing Michigan towns of Detroit, Defiance and Wilmington, was economic suffering for the surrounding communities.
A similar study, done by other researchers, found that robots didn’t hurt net employment in Germany, as workers found jobs in other industries. Prof. Acemoglu thinks this might be due to Germany’s stronger safety net. This includes a collaboration between the government and industry, dubbed Industry 4.0, which encourages both the adoption of new manufacturing technologies and the training of workers in the skills they require.
As has been hashed out many times, the workers displaced in Detroit, Janesville, and other manufacturing hubs were often offered training, but were unable in general to adopt new skills, since they had never really learned how to learn more advanced sorts of learning (See What We Can Learn From ‘Janesville’). So glibly stating that reskilling is the answer to the problem of displaced workers is a cop out.
Mims takes the 'Anotherist' line here -- that robots and AI are 'just another wave of technology' like the steam engine and electricity -- and he claims that the 'bulk of economists' agree with the idea that automation will lead to a net increase in jobs. However, there is a sizable proportion of deep thinking people who are 'Otherists': we believe that robots and especially AI represent something different, unlike previous waves of technology, because the are increasingly emulating human thinking (or something that replaces it).
Yes, the Germans have handled the adoption of robots well, but everything is different there. Manufacturing workers undergo long company and government sponsored apprenticeships, where the workers learn how to apply technical training to manufacturing for years, while being paid. And in the case of economic downturns or changes in technology workers are extensively retrained -- on salary -- and not laid off.
The US will have to undergo a bottom-to-top manufacturing revolution, both governmentally and in the corporations, to pattern the US after the successes of Germany.

Domestic Science
Brianna glared at the cookbook she had picked up in Wilmington. This was her third time trying the cake recipe, and she didn’t think that the sow needed any more sweets in her diet. She had fired the fancy oven built into the fireplace this morning, and the bread and biscuits that she had started it with were cooling, and the pies had just gone in.
In addition to the cookbook, Bree had picked up a set of calibrated measures. Well, labelled ones. They appeared, at least, to have some resemblance to the volumetric measures they were supposed to contain. Brianna carefully used her best Grade 7 Home Ec spoon and sweep1 technique for measuring the flour.
After measuring the dry ingredients into bowls, she carefully packed the butter into the measure, hoping that her butter had the same density as what she was used to seeing in the store, since the recipe gave that measure by weight, not volume. Washing her hands again, she set to creaming the butter, using the technique she had picked up by surreptitiously watching Mrs. Bug years ago. Once it matched her Home Ec memories of what properly creamed butter looked like, she added the ground sugar and kept going.
Once her hands were washed and the batter poured into a cake ring, Brianna removed the pies from the oven, and stuck a hand inside, moving her lips silently as she counted how long she could hold her hand in the oven. Just as she pulled it out, she heard her mother.
“Mama, could you come and help me test the oven temperature?”
Claire came into the kitchen and looked curiously at Brianna.
“I’m sorry if you forgot, dear, but this oven doesn’t come with temperature settings. You fire it, it bakes bread, muffins, pies, sweets and dries stuff out. Have you considered that there’s more than just the different ingredients and lack of recipes that makes cooking in this time a challenge?” But she took an empty pan, and sprinkled some flour into it, and stuck it in the oven, replacing the door. At Brianna’s confused look she explained.
“Mrs. Bug once checked the temperature by seeing if flour browned. She is the only person I’ve had cook cakes for me in such a primitive setting, so I take her as my exemplar.”
“That sounds much more comfortable, and less subjective, than trying to go by how long I can hold my arm in the oven. The lady at Colonial Williamsburg did say she knew it for herself, not in general, didn’t she?”
Claire nodded. “Standardization isn’t really a thing yet. Every oven is different, everyone’s cup size for measuring is different, butter and eggs vary farm to farm; hell, even the flour is different because people are planting different varieties of wheat, and having them ground on whatever the local equipment is. Once you consider all of that, why worry so much about the temperature? Most things that you and I would consider a science are more of an art here. Like trying to dose my patients when my medicines come in plant form rather than pre-measured vials.” She looked at where Brianna’s marked measuring cups (carefully engraved with their volumes by Brianna, so that she wouldn’t mix up the unfamiliar measurements) lay on the table. “What is it you say about measuring? Measure with –“
“Measure with a micrometer, mark with chalk, cut with an axe.”2
“Exactly. At some point, it really doesn’t matter how careful you are, you’re limited by how careful the people before you were. You’re using a cookbook where the author used her own technique for determining the measurements, measuring cups and ingredients that may or may not match the ones she used, and carefully measuring your ingredients and oven temperature to an inch of their lives.”
Brianna glared at her mother. Claire bit her lip to keep from laughing.
“Bree, you lived here before; you studied history. You know that this is actually a different time, not just your regular life with long skirts and stays added in. It was in my lifetime, heck it was technically in your lifetime , that baking a cake stopped being considered a culinary feat, rather than just something to throw together. The amount of skill required to simply follow a recipe right now would get you labelled a cooking genius then. Mandy will survive not having a cake for her birthday. Jem adapted to the 20th century, and is adapting again to being back here. She will follow his lead.”
As Claire opened the oven door to take out the flour and check it’s colour, Brianna took a long breath through her nose and breathed it back out.
“How did you do it? You manage just fine here most of the time. How did you manage to deal with the fact that what used to involve grabbing a box off the pantry shelf and adding eggs and milk now requires the equivalent of a graduate degree in baking?”
Claire dropped the pan of browned flour on the towel she had used to take it out of the oven, and smiled at Brianna.
“I don’t try to bake cakes.”
1 A rejected plot device had me discovering in my research that these days you’re apparently supposed to scoop and sweep after all? But they never announced that and expected people to just magically switch. But it doesn’t really matter, because Bree took her Home Ec classes more than fifty years ago.
2 I don’t know, where micrometers common enough 50 years ago that mechies learned that one? What about 40 years ago, at her job?
